The Black Faun Gallery presents "Gratitude" by Joan Gold. An Artist Talk will take place at the gallery Saturday, November 10th from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.
I had originally thought of this exhibition as a memorial to my life. I am edging towards my eighty-fifth birthday and am well aware that this is the last chapter, however long it may last. I feel a need to honor the time that was allotted to me. I love this world and feel some melancholy about leaving it and that was to be the essential mood of this show. I started working in more somber tones than I have been used to, more grays and darks, and blacks. But while I liked the challenge of change in the work, the more vibrant color that I have favored started creeping back into the paintings. Couldn’t keep it away. And I thought, if this is about life, or more particularly, my life, whatthehell. It has been a good one. Of course I need to keep the more cheerful and bright elements in the work. There have been many ups and many downs and I am thankful for it all. So instead of “Memorial”, the title I chose at first, I have named this exhibition “Gratitude”.
My heartfelt appreciation to the people who provided assistance when it became clear that I had bitten off more than I could chew: Chelsee Harris, my right hand as we mounted the paintings onto the boards; Julio Torres who gessoed, sanded, and wired; Fred Gold who allowed us the use of his shop; Doug Holsclaw who showed us how to brace the boards and more, Gabe Rose who cut the boards; Cielo Bravo who prepared paper; Mercedes Cangas who was a maid of all trades and a loyal personal Uber; Fernando Cangas who braced the boards and varnished and framed, Laura Cangas who transported the boards, the Pollack- Krasner Foundation that provided funds; and the Black Faun Gallery for lending me this fine venue to show my wares.
